We have often seen the media misrepresent particular cultures or communities. We need to understand the importance of representing them accurately to showcase their true identity. The capitalist mentality and lack of awareness of people are just some of the reasons why this happens in the media.
In order to replace this awful practice of prejudice, stereotype, bigotry, and many other social stigmas, one must familiarize themselves with these cultures and remove the glasses of colonization from their eyes. James Meeker, a popular photojournalist, and traveler, agrees with Mark Twain’s opinion regarding travel and has made the conscious effort to apply this in his travels.
Over the past few years, he has traveled to around 43 countries, documenting each culture and representing it in its purest form on social media websites like Instagram. Even though the center of his journey focuses on the travel itself, he has made sure that he acquaints all his viewers with the values of cultural awareness.
Photojournalism has been one of the biggest contributors which have uplifted this movement altogether. Through this, he has been able to let people view the actual events and places that depict the cultural heritage it possesses. Photojournalism is an underrated form of art. Often writers use their imagination to explain the intricacies of a place, while movies stick to the conventional stereotypes. Whereas photographs give viewers an opportunity to be subjective and look beyond the visuals. It allows them to explore the imagery with different perspectives and pursue it as a rhetoric art form.
James is currently active in Australia where he is exploring the beaches, learning about the historical sites and eating interesting food. While explaining one of the most interesting parts of the trip, James says, meeting new people, and sharing life stories is another way of learning and unlearning.
